Contents
Cetirizine 5 mg, phenylephrine HCl 5 mg
Indications/Uses
Relief of runny nose, itchy nose & throat, clogged nose, sneezing, & itchy or watery eyes associated w/ allergic rhinitis; swollen, pale red bumps (hives or urticaria) caused by allergic reactions.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Childn 6-12 yr 5 mL every 12 hr, 2-5 yr 2.5 mL every 12 hr.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Cetirizine: Hypersensitivity/allergy to cetirizine diHCl, hydroxyzine, to any piperazine derivatives medication. Phenylephrine Allergy to phenylephrine, CV disease, elevated BP, DM, closed-angle glaucoma, thyroid disorder, pheochromocytoma, mental or mood disorders, difficulty urinating (eg, prostate problems).
Special Precautions
Do not double the dose. Cetirizine: Pruritus &/or urticaria may occur when treatment is stopped. Patients w/ urinary retention (eg, spinal cord lesion, prostatic hyperplasia). Moderate or severe renal impairment. Phenylephrine: Caution in patients w/ Raynaud's phenomenon. Galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption.
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, headache. Cetirizine: Fatigue, abdominal pain, xerostomia, somnolence, pharyngitis. Phenylephrine: Trouble sleeping, lightheadedness, nervousness, shaking, palpitations, fast & irregular heartbeat.
Drug Interactions
Phenylephrine: MAOIs. Enhance effects of anticholinergic drugs eg, TCAs. Increase possibility of arrhythmias in digitalised patients. Enhance CV effects of other decongestants. Vasodilators, β-blockers or enzyme inducers eg, alcohol. Cetirizine: May enhance effects of barbiturates, hypnotics, opioid analgesics, anxiolytic sedatives, MAOIs, atropine. Can also mask symptoms of ototoxicity in aminoglycoside antibiotics eg, gentamicin, amikacin, tobramycin, neomycin, & streptomycin. Other medicines for cough, cold or allergy.
